Objective
Our objective is to improve the community livelihood through cacao rehabilitation.
Context
Caritas Maumere started the Cacao Rehabilitation Programme in October 2013 and two phases of the programme have been finished thus far. From 2013 to 2014, our program assisted 200 farmers to obtain 0,10 Ha of land, increasing their land area to 20 Ha. In 2015 and 2016, we similarly assisted 156 farmers with each farmer getting an additional 0,25 Ha of land so that the total of the land area is 39 Ha. Following the success of this program, many other farmers expressed their interest to join. In the third planning phase (2016-2017), Caritas Maumere will continue to cooperate with the Agriculture Department of Sikka Regency and VECO Indonesia for farmer reinforcement as well as continue to provide early assistance for the farmers in Halehebing (a parish on the south coast of Sikka Regency).
Attention and interest in Caritas Maumere’s farmer assisting experience is growing. The Agriculture and Plantation Department of Sikka Regency wants to offer support by providing superior cacao seeds (until 2018), while VECO Indonesia wants to offer support through training farmers and establishing a marketing network (until 2018).
Some activities we organize with these farmers include: coordination and networking in the area, data collection, training, land conservation, land preparation and distribution of cacao seedlings.
Beneficiaries
Since its creation, more than 140 cacao farmers have benefited from of the program.
